Introduction

The Snelgars have lived in Martin Parish since self-building Hancock’s Cottage (Tidpit) 1976-78 . The building is described in ‘The Self Builder’ by N.Snelgar (David & Charles 1984). From a rented Folliots Farmyard we ran Windmill Nursery up to 2006 when we purchased Maple Field at the North end of the village. We sold Hancock’s cottage and set up Maple Field Milk C.I.C as an enterprise to milk 25 dairy cows and to process and sell fresh milk to customers within 15 miles of the farm.

Whilst still at Hancocks we, with 8 other people, founded a community owned farm and village shop and named it Future Farms-Martin Ltd ( ITV Television 8-part documentary ‘Feeding Martin’ 2004).

In 2010 we opened Maple Field Milk to sell direct to the doorstep. The project ceased in 2018 due to adverse planning outcomes with the Local Authority. Maple Field has changed into a place of learning, experimentation in horticulture , thinking and outdoor enjoyment of the perfect surroundings.
